MONTMELÓ (September 8th, 2012) – In bright sunshine and with a temperature of around 28 degrees, the 15th running of the 24H BARCELONA got underway at the Circuit de Catalunya at noon today. Italian driver Maurizio Mediani benefited from his pole position and took the lead with the Russian Bears Motorsport-Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 (#4, Miguel Toril/Dmitry Samorukov/Boris Rotenberg/Maurizio Mediani/Sergey Zlobin), but during the first hour, he already came under pressure from Tim Mullen with the Lapidus Racing-McLaren MP4-12C GT3 (#3, Klaas Hummel/Adam Christodoulou/Phil Quaife/Tim Mullen). At the beginning of lap 21, Mullen placed a successful attack on Mediani and took the lead. After that, the McLaren has remained on top for the rest of the first two hours, apart from the scheduled pit stop. Two hours into the race, Phil Quaife, who took over the McLaren, has a margin of 1:31 minutes from Miguel Toril, who replaced Maurizio Mediani in the Ferrari. The Las Moras Racing-Renault Mégane Trophy (#12, Luc Braams/Duncan Huisman/Michael Munemann/Ronald Morien), firstly driven by Duncan Huisman and then by Ronald Morien, has been in third place throughout the first two hours and leading the SP2 class.
The number 5-Car Collection-Porsche 997 Cup (Daniel Allemann/Philipp Schnyder/Marco Zolin-Meyer/Dominique Lucas) is leading the Porsche 997 class in fifth place overall. The best-placed SP3 car is the Team Partl Motorsport-BMW M3 GT4 (#20, Hermann Bock/Max Partl/Jörg Weidinger) in sixth place overall. The A5 class leader is the Tischner Motorsport-BMW M3 E46 (#24, Michael Tischner, Ulrich Becker, Matthias Tischner, Marco Schelp) in ninth place overall. The Russian Bears Motorsport-SEAT Leon Supercopa (#32, Vyacheslav Maleev, Mikhail Maleev, Kirill Ladygin, Pol Rosell, Joan Vinyes) is A3T class leader in tenth place overall, from the A4 class leading YMOR/Bas Koeten Racing-BMW Z3 M Coupé (Martin van den Berge/Richard Budding/Simon Gras) in eleventh place. The A2 class leader Besaplast Racing Team-MINI Cooper S (Franjo Kovac/Fredrik Lestrup/Thomas Tekaat/Ralf Eisenreich) currently is 13th overall and the best-placed D1 diesel-powered car is the 4PET by Las Motas Racing-BMW 123 (#54, Hans Kuipers/Tom v.d. Mosselaar/Dries Zwienenberg/Liesette Braams) in 30th place overall.
